Who is eligible for permanent residence in Mauritius? - Qui est eligible pour demander une residence permanente a Maurice?

Mauritius is a Paradise island which nearly a million tourists across the world come to visit year in year out. Some would like to stay here forever and would surely wonder which type of foreigner could aspire gaining permanent residency in this wonderful land. However, if one is born abroad, gaining permanent residence in Mauritius is subject to some specific laws and regulations as well as conditions. Some specific categories of people are eligible to apply for permanent residence in the Republic of Mauritius. The following categories of persons are eligible for Permanent Residence Permit as indicated by the Government website: 

1. An investor who for three consecutive years has been holding  an Occupation Permit immediately prior to the the date of application for Permanent Residence Permit. His company’s sales should have exceeded Rs 15 million during each of the three aforementioned years in as regards each  shareholder of the company

 2. A self-employed who has been holding for three years an Occupation Permit immediately before the date of application for Permanent Residence Permit.  His income should have exceeded Rs 3 million every year during each of these three aforementioned years.

 3. A professional who has been holding for three years an Occupation or a Work Permit immediately before the date of application for Permanent Residence Permit. He should have drawn a basic salary of at least Rs 150,000 monthly over the abovementioned three years.

 4. A retired non-citizen should have held a Residence Permit for three years. Furthermore he should have transferred to Mauritius at least 40,000 USD or its equivalent in convertible currency on a yearly basis during each of these three years.

There are some specific laws which cover the Visa and Residence Permits namely the Immigration Act, the Passport Act (and Government notice no.177 of 1993, the Deportation Act and the Non-Citizens (Employment Restriction) Act (and the Government Notice No. 115 of 1996).
