The typical milestones in the life of a typical Mauritian (Consultation stage)

Some consider that it is not proper to classify or categorise things but using the average as the benchmark has always been one of the means to make comparisons over time and there is always some degree of arbitrariness in the choice of the indicator...

There are some milestones in life which as Mauritian we all have to go through. In fact, over the years the timing of these milestones has evolved. For instance, taking the example of marriage, previously a typical Mauritian would get married at an earlier age say 20-25 years old and now more typically between 25 and 35 years. This article though mainly of a descriptive nature is meant to open the eyes of the readers as regards some evolutions occurring in our society. It is clear that the realities of one and another will vary according to many factors mainly of socio economic and cultural nature and also by the fact that our destiny is unique. This is somewhat taken on board. There is no question of good or bad, it is just the evolution, the trend. Maybe when reading this, you will not find it applicable to you directly, though there are some quite universal facts which have been considered. The main milestones in the life of a Mauritian have been itemized as follows:

  •  Birth
  •  From Birth to Preprimary schooling
  •  Pre primary schooling
  •  Primary schooling (lower level)
  •  Primary schooling (upper level)
  •  Secondary schooling (till form IV)
  •  Secondary schooling (Form IV to VI)
  •  Obtaining the driving license and reaching University level and/or Job entry
  •  Building foundations of a career
  •  Moving up the ladder
  •  Building a family and upbringing the next generation
  •  Retiring from work
  •  Grandparent role.

Before finalizing this list many bouzermaurice friends will be consulted and though this has been chronologically presented there are some stages which can occur in a different chronology and will be discussed.

Very very true for any typical Mauritian I must say. However, I would like to make a correlation between the new age band for marriage and career/achievement.

Some people tend to think that marriage is but the end of their career path or their progression, so they want to get reach to the top first before getting married.

My analysis is that you are all wrong and mistaken to think that marriage marks the end of all opportunities for career advancement... That is of course another debate.

Rishi - To expand the sections "building foundations of a career" and "moving up the ladder" maybe we could add other typical "challenges" that we must go through.

I'll have more to come

nowadays, evolution is more towards freedom, freedom of speech, child's right, women's right, human right, animal right and the list keeps on increasing.....
youngsters of today wont think of getting married as an obligation as it used to be .now its more about being in the trend yet free,,,freedom is sought even in within a couple.its the old school.to think about commitment after getting a job,or ending studies..
with so many avenues opened,in terms of education, technology, communication, etc,we have a tendency to explore more and more..
yes we have evolved and for the better, especially women,we know our rights and we equally develop our capacities to the fullest, the march has started and hopefully must continue....

The list is almost all inclusive. Each n every point listed is multi faceted n u can definitely expand on these.

I wud however point out that as 4 our seniors their role is not really limited 2 that of fulfilling d duties of grandparents nwdays since many of them do plan their retirement in advance.N this makes them get involved in different spheres of activities..maybe u cud dwell on this..

Cheers
